But again, if that's what they truly want to accomplish, it's pretty easy to pass a thou-shalt-not-join-a-team-after-September rule.

And no, I don't think the rule does give players an out. My understanding is that Nabokov is in breach of contract right now by not reporting to the Islanders and if the Islanders wanted to be jerks about it they could probably take him to small claims court or something along those lines.

And I think if you ditched your NHL team for Europe, then tried to come back in the same season, your NHL contract would still be there (unless the player and the team mutually agreed to tear up the contract), so you'd have to return to your original NHL team. I'm not 100% sure, but that seems logical to me.David Karphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13710657164031182109noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4737479797606051454.post-76575751759097785002011-01-25T14:26:53.058-05:002011-01-25T14:26:53.058-05:00I imagine it provides an incentive for the player ...I imagine it provides an incentive for the player to play the entire season in the NHL, rather then parachuting in during a cup run in April. If it has that effect, perhaps it is a winning proposition for the league, as they get the best players for the whole year.

Though I still think it's a dumb rule.

Another thought: does it give players an out when they're on a team they don't like? Are they able to go and play a game or two in Europe until the season starts, then come back and go on waivers rather than be stuck in Nashville, or wherever? I don't know the NHL rules well enough to know how they would be able to re-enter the league.Jonathanhttp://thecommons-ccd.comnoreply@blogger.com
